Dear Reader,
Researching women writers, I saw myself in Flannery O’Connor – a girl chafing against her Southern family’s strict rules. Looking deeper, I found the girl I wish I’d been – one who fought with angels, chewed tobacco, and defied her mother to free herself as a writer.

That Flannery emerges “as a human being…in her own right,” said reviewer Kim Vanderlaan of my book, praising the “wide array” of illustrations, including (personal favorites) O’Connor’s own cartoons.
