Mary Carpenter – Flannery O’Connor: A Girl Who Knew Her Own Mind

Flannery O'Connor cover

Dear Reader,
Researching women writers, I saw myself in Flannery O’Connor – a girl chafing against her Southern family’s strict rules. Looking deeper, I found the girl I wish I’d been – one who fought with angels, chewed tobacco, and defied her mother to free herself as a writer.

That Flannery emerges “as a human being…in her own right,” said reviewer Kim Vanderlaan of my book, praising the “wide array” of illustrations, including (personal favorites) O’Connor’s own cartoons.

This year is the 100th anniversary of O’Connor’s birth, a celebration of her timeless talent, and an invitation to the uninitiated to discover her quirky allure. Enjoy reading!
